The Future is in SSD

Posted in: Data Storage |

Hard disk drives (HDD) have been the primary means of data storage in computers for a long, long time. They have become relatively cheap, ultra-reliable, and really huge. There are now hard drives that can save as much as 2 terrabytes (TB) of data. That’s a huge amount of information!

However, hard drives are still mechanical devices, with plenty of moving parts inside. In the long run, if any of those parts fails, then the integrity of the stored data could be compromised. That’s where the Solid-state drives (SSD) come in.

SSDs have been around for several years now but are only now becoming popular. This is because SSDs are a lot more expensive than HDDs of the same capacity. And speaking of capacity, SSDs have smaller maximum capacities compared to HDDs.

That however is changing. SSDs can now go up to as much as 260 gigabytes (GB), a big difference a little over a year ago when they maxed out at 160 GB. They are also much more reliable than HDDs because they have no moving parts. They have replaced HDDs in some laptops, and probably will totally replace HDDs in the long run.

Clearly, the future of computing is with SSDs.
